The Summerland Sportsman’s Association held two events on the weekend of June 3 and 4.
The association was one of many clubs across Canada who celebrated National Range Day on Saturday, June 3. This day recognises the 2.3 million licensed gun owners in Canada.
The Sportsman’s Association hosted 22 visitors who learned about basic range safety protocols and how to handle fire firearms properly. They had the opportunity to use rifles, shotguns, pistols and try their hand at archery.
Sunday was visitors day and Kids Fishing Derby held at Agur Lake Camp west of Summerland. The event was hosted by Agur Lake Camp Society, the Summerland Sportsman’s Association and Freshwater Fisheries Society. The date coincided with the Summerland Action Festival.
Agur Lake Camp is a non-profit organization that operates the province’s only wheelchair accessible, barrier free campground. This is for people of all ages with various abilities to enjoy nature in a safe, inclusive environment, along with family, friends and caregivers.
A total of 56 children participated. Freshwater Fisheries Society provided the kids with fishing rods and bait. Volunteers from the Summerland Sportsman’s Association helped the young fishers with bait, throwing and reeling in their catch. Due to the recent hot weather the fish were at the bottom of the lake. Only 12 fish were caught, seven of which were by three young fishers.
At 3 p.m., certificates were awarded for the biggest fish and to those who caught their first fish. All the young fishers received a prize donated by Summerland Sportsman’s Association.
